In our minds, indie pop veterans of Montreal can do no wrong. We’ve worked with the band since 2005, and the next video they’re bringing to the table is the eighth HIP will be promoting. For years, we’ve seen this band evolve in their musical style and visual impact. Their video for “Coquet Coquette” is no different and acts as a great stepping stone into what of Montreal will be offering up next.
Each time, of Montreal has come up with a new treatment for their videos. With “Coquet Coquette,” the band has taken the completely theatrical approach by featuring a battle where you’re left wondering who was meant to be the victor. This isn’t your typical gory battle where men (and even some women) stripped down to loincloths all out attack each other from out in the water and onto the beach. There’s a certain mythical artistry to this war – from the hues of blue to the way the red from the blood of those who have fallen pop. In the end, few are left standing. You get completely enraptured by the visuals and the way it blends so well with the infectiously catchy sound that is so key to this group (who are now up to 8 members). The surrealism that they’re known for in their videos is taken to a whole new level with “Coquet Coquette.”
It’s hard to expect anything less from of Montreal, who has been around for almost 15 years. When we mention evolvement, just listen to the track itself, which is laden with sharp guitars, actual use of live drums and just a hint of funk and R&B. All the while, of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes inevitably delivers with his immediately recognizable voice.
