Who’ll be the next young singer with an electrifying voice to storm contemporary hit radio? Take it from us: don’t bet against Amanda Morra. The Toronto-based singer is still unknown south of the Canadian border, but that’s bound to change, and soon: she’s got everything it takes to become a Billboard regular. Begin with her voice – a supple instrument perfectly calibrated to carry propulsive R&B and explosive pop. On camera, she’s an incandescent presence, dominating every frame of her glamorous video clips. Her sense of style is outrageous, flashy, eye-catching, and frequently astonishing; her dancing is provocative, kinetic, alluring.

None of that would matter, of course, if she didn’t have the songs. Her material is stellar: all three of her singles compare favorably to current Top 40 hits. “The Spell” is reminiscent of Britney Spears at her brashest – it’s all thick bass, skittering snare, and old-school ping-pong synthesizer, culminating in a sizzling chorus. The Nelly Furtado-like “Dreams” is every bit as infectious and even more melodic: Morra sings of ambition and desire over hand-claps and crisp acoustic guitar. “The Music” is a wildly contagious club track with a gigantic beat; it’s a guaranteed crowd-mover. Now comes “1 And Only”, her latest single, and her most undeniable track yet: sexy and razor-sharp, it wouldn’t sound out of place on a classic mid-Eighties Madonna set.

All of these singles will soon be available on Amanda, her upcoming debut album. The ambitious Morra has plans for an international campaign – the LP will be available to American listeners as well as Canadian ones, and she’ll be supporting the release with a series of high-profile gigs. In fact, radio listeners will soon be hearing the sounds of Amanda as “1 And Only” hits stations nationwide as we speak! The flashy clip for “1 And Only” demonstrates just how exciting Morra’s concerts are: the choreography is mesmerizing, the melodies are catchy, the hooks sparkle, and the rhythms slam. Directed by Cazhhmere – who specializes in matching budding Canadian pop stars with clips that highlight their talents – the “1 And Only” spot finds Amanda Morra at her most commanding, putting a line of dancers (and a very lucky young man) through the paces.

Since this is an Amanda Morra video, the outfits need to be stellar – and Cazhhmere and the audacious young singer don’t disappoint. At various times in the clip, Morra appears in a skintight blue suit with matching blue leather motorcycle gloves and a sea-captain’s hat, “scanner” robot sunglasses and ringlet bracelets, Spandex, high boots, gigantic fake eyelashes and purple eye-shadow. It’s all visually arresting and playfully sexy; once you begin watching Morra, it’s hard to stop. Her dance routines are perfectly executed, but that’s not the main reason to tune in: every move she makes in front of the camera, no matter how exaggerated, is animated by vivacity and humanity. That’s a rare trait – one shared only by the biggest pop stars.
