The HIP Video Promo staff and Andy Gesner are pleased to introduce a new video from the indie-rock band, The Great Book of John. After a great success with their immensely famous rendition of INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart,” the bluesy Southern rock band is back with yet another powerful video for their song “Simple Things.” With catchy—yet incredibly sultry—harmonies, the band has found a way to provide a constant flow of endearing melodies and bluesy chords. On the other hand, the music they create is neither blues, nor rock: it contains an art of its own, which makes this heavy spirited group of musicians impossible to ignore.

The Great Book of John’s music comes from a mysterious source of originality. At times you are struck with the haunting voice of Jeff Buckley, while at other times the spirits of popular blues artists, such as Stevie Ray Vaughn confront you. However, you won’t be able to put your finger on exactly what The Great Book of John sounds like because they have a an extraordinary gift. The band is led by Alabama’s own Taylor Shaw, who is struck with the psychedelic elements of an old soul. When listening to his lyrics, you could feel him singing from the very depths of his being; his emotional, yet somewhat creepy voice creates an ambiance to the very own soundtrack of his life. With the help and influence of Jeffery Cain (formerly of Remy Zero), their label Communicating Vessels has provided a vast amount of support towards the creation of this wondrous album. Their new video for “Simple Things” has already premiered on AOL Spinner and has received high praise from various viewers. They have recently played a CMJ showcase at this year’s event, and has left the crowd behind is utter amazement at their natural and characteristic ability to be so connected to the music that they create.

The video for “Simple Things” not only tells a magnificent story line, but it creates a valuable connection between the artist and the fan. Confronted by his reality, the main character of this short film retrieves a box from a helpless man, which holds a secret to his imagination. While he locks himself away from his friends and all of society, he is absorbed in an obsession of a temporary and vague temptation. Thus, he finds himself figuratively blinded by this so-called temptation. The video empowers our ideas of faith and the every day struggles between reality and what we merely perceive to be true. With a hint towards Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, The Great Book of John captures an idea that we must remain faithful to ourselves by not losing our minds to the power of temptation. Although there is no set meaning to this video, it is clear that The Great Book of John has left the interpretation up to their viewers, and like every great meaningful thing it captures a universal feeling of the power of the unknown that exists within the human mind.

From blues to indie-rock, The Great Book of John will fill you with soulful lyrics and hearty guitar solos—not to mention the incredible harmonies that linger throughout. You will find yourself enraptured by the amount of soul that this band owns up to, and HIP Video Promo is growing increasingly more excited and eager to hear more about The Great Book of John. .
