My fondness for Tooth & Nail Records has been long-standing, going back to the days of when I first started promoting music videos almost seven years ago. These Seattle based indie rock stalwarts have been responsible for tons of truly inspiring music and equally intriguing music videos. Tooth & Nail are continuing to fight the good fight and are stronger than ever in 2003, and have come to us here at HIP Video Promo to make sure that you all know about their great new artists! The priority clip on this reel comes from the great state of Virginia, just in time to be a panacea for the “dog days of summer.”

“Summertime” is the vivid new video from Norfolk, Virginia’s Mae, the first single from their Destination: Beautiful CD. Everyone at Tooth & Nail are ecstatic about this band as they crisscross America wowing audiences with their versatile song writing and dramatic musicianship (Mae play over two hundred shows per year). It’s a brisk, well-crafted power pop tune, smoothly incorporating Mae’s wide range of musical influences. Some of those influences include pop giants like the Beatles and U2, and echoes of both those bands’ sounds can be heard here. Dave Gimenez (vocals, guitar) combines an earnest delivery and clever phrasing to wonderful effect; and the band’s performance is energetic without becoming histrionic. The rhythm section of Jacob Marshall (drums, and along with Gimenez the other original member of the band) and Mark Padgett (bass) supply a solid yet flexible foundation for this deceptively intricate arrangement.

Visually, director Liz Otis features intercut home movies (of summertime fun and frolic, of course) nostalgically meshed with performance shots, set in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations. The shooting is artfully done, using the natural features in the outdoor settings to frame the performing musicians – a distinctive technique well chosen for this video. Taken together, the song and visuals add up to a solid offering from this up and coming band on the indie rock circuit.
