Sonny & the Sunsets and the beautiful, warm west coast are synonymous with one another. Birthed from the sand, the surf, and twilight campfires down in Ocean Beach, the band’s busted beach-pop songs spark recollections of doo wop’s otherworldly despair, a dose of goofball humor from the Michael Hurley school, and positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman. Helmed by the singer/songwriter, playwright, author & onetime troubadour Sonny Smith, The Sunsets have featured a revolving door lineup that has included prolific musicians Shayde Sartin, Ryan Browne, Kelley Stoltz and Tahlia Harbour. Adopting a range of sounds, Smith’s sardonic, laid-back style is interwoven throughout his compelling songwriting and vocals. Following their critically acclaimed 2013 album, Antenna To The Afterworld, the band kicked off 2015 with the release of their highly anticipated follow-up, Talent Night At The Ashram, and it delivers more of the psych-pop that fans have grown to know and love. Here at HIP Video Promo, we’re proud to present the music video for the band’s latest single, “Happy Carrot Health Food Store.”

Anyone who frequents their local health food store knows it can be a trip. From the under-stimulated employees to the meandering customers, there’s always a distinctive cast of characters roaming around with their own, mundane (though perhaps strangely fascinating) stories to tell. Sonny Smith is acutely tuned into this. So much so, that he wrote “Happy Carrot Health Food Store” to highlight this common, often-amusing experience and essentially drop the listener into the center of this somewhat niche, hipster-y ecosystem. The song is a sprawling, low-fi, seven minute masterpiece that moves from jangly surf-rock to acid-soaked, psychedelic, space-rock.

The Jim Granato-directed music video stars Sonny Smith and several others as we discover some of the back story to few of these individuals. The video begins very Clerks-esque, shot in black and white, at the health food spot and ultimately takes an impressive 180’ towards the end when everything transforms into colorful, out-of-this-world animation created by Teppei Ando of Murder Dollhouse (who contributed art to Sonny & the Sunsets’ previous music video for their single, “Cheap Extensions”). The journey is epic from start to finish and practically demands multiple viewings.

We’re thrilled to be a part of the Sonny & the Sunsets and Polyvinyl Records promotional team once again and are confident that this is a video you and your viewers will embrace!
