Throwback HIP Spotlight: Metric

From our neighbor up north, Toronto band Metric has been shaking the music scene up ever since the early 2000s. The foursome made up of Emily Haines, James Shaw, Joshua Winstead, and Joules Scott-Key have followed nothing but their own impulses regarding their music.

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Fake Problems

Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting up with some of our cherished clients to film a video interview that helps viewers get to know the artist as well as learn more about their new music video. Previously called “The HIP Clip”, these videos allow us to help connect artists with the world, as we give some insight and inside information into who they are and the music and videos they make.

Throwback HIP Spotlight: The Coathangers

In the summer of 2016, we were able to work with one of our favorite indie labels Suicide Squeeze and Atlanta girl group The Coathangers to promote their video "Down Down." And here, "girl group" is a compliment: when we met up with them for this HIP Spotlight, they told us about wanting to be poised, strong, powerful women like the girl groups they look up to.

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Jet Lag Gemini

New Jersey has been home to countless great artists over the years, and among them one of our favorites was Jet Lag Gemini, who called Mahwah their home (although vocalist/guitarist Misha Zilman is from Russia, and brothers Matei and Vlad Gheorghiu are from Romania). They played their first show on March 27, 2004, releasing their first EP Business in 2005.

liars

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Liars

Liars are not your typical indie-rock band; they're always experimenting, changing, trying something new. We were able to work with them to promote four separate videos, the first being "Plaster Casts of Everything" followed by "House Clouds", both from their 2007 self-titled album. We met up with founding member Aaron Hemphill in early 2008 to film this HIP Clip, where he told us all about creating an innovative sound, their influences, and working with directors Patrick Daughters ("Plaster Casts of Everything") and Sonny Gerasimowicz ("House Clouds") on these two distinctly different and equally delightful clips.

sarah jaffe

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Sarah Jaffe

It takes a very special person to be able to bend genres around her style and still make it work. Sara Jaffe has an ever-expanding sound due to her diverse approach to songwriting and performance. What began as a folk-infused approach transitioned to a blend of electronic experimentation with a songwriting skill set that is second to none.

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Carbon/Silicon

Back in 2003, Mick Jones (The Clash, Big Audio Dynamite) and Tony James (Generation X, Sisters Of Mercy, Sigue Sigue Sputnik) got together to form Carbon/Silicon. It wasn't even their first collaboration: they'd previously made music together in London SS. Carbon/Silicon combines punk rock/rock-and-roll energy with an excitement for new technologies and a fan-friendly web presence.

juno reactor

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Juno Reactor

Juno Reactor are sonic explorers with deep roots in international club music, blending Eastern and Western influences. Way back in 2008, we had the pleasure of promoting their video for "Inca Steppa" and that fall, we met up with Ben Watkins to film this HIP Clip video interview. On a busy street in New York while signing autographs, Watkins told us all about the new album Gods & Monsters, introducing new band members Squid and Sugizo, their improvisational live performances, and filming "Inca Steppa" in Kiev. Check out the Juno Reactor HIP Clip below!

Throwback HIP Spotlight: Doomtree

The 2012 SXSW music festival was a busy time for HIP Video Promo and all of the featured musicians that we had the honor of promoting back then. We were lucky enough to be able to sit down and chat with a number of the critically acclaimed HIP acts that were making waves and stirring things up, with one of our favorite interviews being with the hip hop collective Doomtree.
