With influences such as Radiohead, Muse, Metric and My Bloody Valentine, The Capsules have created a blend of musical genres with their dream-pop inspired walls of sound. Their latest videos “Across the Sky” and “Our Apocalypse,” translate the space that exists between reality and the state of whimsy, which makes up the magnificently beautiful music of The Capsules.

Singer/guitarist Julie Shields has a comforting voice while the melodic bass of Jason Shields and Kevin Trevino’s understated drumming keep the tracks deceptively simple. Jason and Julie have been writing music together since high school. During the process, they fell in love, got married, and started their first band Shallow. As Shallow was winding down, Jason and Julie were looking to progress their music towards a more simplified sound. Kevin Trevino had been a fan of the band and after a few rehearsals, they formed under the new name The Capsules. They began touring, making records, and winning fans, and were soon asked by creator Steven Hillenburg to write a song for an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. Their music has also been featured in the PBS Television show Roadtrip Nation, and in video games including the megahit Borderlands 2. They have shared the stage with some great musical acts such as The Flaming Lips, Garbage, Mercury Rev, and Low.

In regards to their music writing, The Capsules have a tendency for sleepless nights, writing pensive and late night reveries. These elements are catapulting within the realms of their songs on the album Northern Lights & Southern Skies. Tracks unfold into a place where the heart is open to the mysterious thoughts pertaining to the universe, and help music listeners gain a little bit of insight into the experiences of love, loss, and longing. However, The Capsules decided to expand their musical pallets on Northern Lights & Southern Skies and used less guitar and more keyboards, loops, and electronics than they have on previous efforts. “Across the Sky” and “Our Apocalypse” still contains their otherworldly aura including a dark edge that keeps everything rooted to the earth.

About the Videos: “Across the Sky” offers an interesting outlook on musical performances. We watch as The Capsules cleverly present us with a charming and entertaining clip. The video includes them performing as the real-life doppelgangers for a set of musician toys. These toys represent people, and the video captures the sense of self-awareness. “Across the Sky” is a driving and melodic tune setting forth an aura of comfort and utter pleasing notes. Shields’ voice is soothing and calm, yet noteworthy and delicious.

In stark contrast, their second video, “Our Apocalypse”, presents us with the dark and haunting side of this band. Spectral images of a desolate world mirror life itself, and the catapulting notes and harmonic structure of the song transcend modern ambient rock.

The soft and genuine energies of The Capsules are a breath of fresh air for the contemporary indie-rock music listener. “Across the Sky” and “Our Apocalypse” highlight the deep-rooted talent that exists within the music of these musicians.
