It’s the stuff of music legend — a band develops a sound so elemental and undeniable that the group is catapulted from regional notoriety to global acclaim. For The Lumineers, this is no fairy tale. In 2012, if you had a radio, if you had access to the Internet or a music video channel, if you had a set of ears, you heard “Ho Hey.” Chances are, you sang along — not just with the enthusiastic group chant that gave the multiplatinum smash its name, but also with Wesley Schultz’s pure, radiant tenor. “Ho Hey” became a worldwide hit, and obliterated the boundaries between the folk, country, and pop-rock audiences. Finally, there was a song on the mainstream airwaves that everybody could agree on.

The Lumineers were just getting started. The Denver quintet followed “Ho Hey” with “Stubborn Love,” which showcased a different side of the band (the group’s million-selling debut album was refreshingly varied); that record went platinum, too. “Submarines,” the third single from The Lumineers, charted as well, and demonstrated that the group was just as good at bouncy, strutting piano-pop as it was at folksy stomp. Propelled by these successes, the Lumineers toured the world, selling out venues in North America, Europe, and Australia. No pyrotechnics, showbiz shell-games, or major label backing was ever necessary for these artists; the Lumineers proved that outstanding musicianship and songs sung from the heart are always the best special effects.

It would be an understatement to call Cleopatra, the group’s follow-up to The Lumineers an anticipated release. In the three years since “Ho Hey,” thousands of fans of the band have taken to Internet message boards to register their desire for more songs from the Lumineers. Cleopatra won’t be available until April, but the band has released a lead single, and it’s practically guaranteed to be another smash. The sound of “Ophelia” will feel familiar to anybody who loved the Lumineers debut — but it also builds on the qualities that made the band such a delight. The folk percussion, pounding piano, and winsome, instantly memorable melodies are all here, but the heartfelt lyrics cut deeper, the band plays a little rawer, and Wesley Schultz’s voice is even sweeter and more impassioned than it was on the first album.

The video for “Ophelia” reunites the Lumineers with Isaac Ravishakara, the director of the moody, gorgeous clip for “Stubborn Love.” Ravishankara, who has shot stunning videos for Hozier (“Work Song”) Okkervil River (“Your Past Life As A Blast”), Keith Urban (“A Little Bit Of Everything”), KT Tunstall (“Feel It All”) and many other adventurous musicians, is a perfect fit for the Lumineers — his dreamlike imagery and masterful use of available light matches the effortless incandescence of  Schultz’s voice. Here he captures the frontman in the midst of an out-of-body experience. In the middle of a show, while at the center microphone, Wesley Schultz splits in two, with one half playing with his bandmates and other skipping down a rain-washed city alleyway. It’s a fine metaphor for the internal divisions that all great songwriters have — and the quest for inspiration that drives them.
