At once uplifting and heart wrenching, Matt Pond songs have a way of reminding the listener to notice the beauty in the things often overlooked, which serves as a kind of metaphor for the band itself. From the brand new album The State Of Gold, we are very excited to present to you today the exceptional clips for “Take Me With You” and “Emptiness.”

To say that Matt Pond has a cult following would be an understatement. While he might not be quite mainstream, he’s enjoyed features on the musically-revered TV show The OC and a long-running Starbucks commercial. Attend any of his shows and you’ll find troves of fans, many who have followed for a decade or more. And this year, the band funded their new album, The State of Gold, via an entirely crowd-sourced Pledge campaign that far surpassed its initial goal.

NPR’s First Listen called Matt Pond an “old-fashioned troubadour above all”, a title he embraces. Pond wrote The State Of Gold in fits of inspiration throughout 2014, following a battle with writer’s block that had him questioning his place in the music world. The new album introduces sleeker production chops and more assertive percussion with synthetic undercurrents that highlight the characteristic simplicity of the songs. However, TSOG is still very much a MP album at its core, delving into the space between hope and hopelessness, a place that Matt Pond traverses like no other.

“Take Me With You” is a video of mesmerizing beauty and embracing the spirit of wanderlust that lives inside many of us. In the beginning of the clip, Pond and his lady find an abandoned stretch limo on the road with the keys inside. It’s an opportunity they can’t pass up. Along the way they pick up their passengers (some human, some furry) and make the most of their freedom, exploring the beautiful world around all them. Life is good and the smiles are aplenty. Like the song says, “It feels good to be gone.”

The “Emptiness” video picks up where “Take Me With You“ left off. They’re drawn towards a solitary hotel, soon to discover they are the only ones to be found. They search for clues through maps, old movie reels, anything they can find to clue them in. Eventually they find a scale model of a familiar scene; the beginning of the “Take Me With You” video. This cycle of deja vu quickly gets more cryptic and closer to real time at an alarming rate. It all comes full circle in a brilliant stroke of cinema, tying together two exceptional videos into a common theme.
