Doomtree’s most recent video, “Bangarang,” set the hip-hop collective in a raucous karaoke party while their pal Har Mar Superstar stripped down to his undies. It was bright, colorful, hilarious, and brilliantly weird. With their new video for “Beacon,” Doomtree proves their video work is as ambitious and far-ranging as their music is. “Beacon” shows a darker, more cerebral side of the collective, which hired director Bo Hakala to use an innovative dual-focus technique to capture the frenetic, noir character of the song. The video proves again that together the members of Doomtree create a style, a sound, and a look all their own; their work as a collective benefits from each of their individual styles and the effect amounts to more than the sum of its parts.

While not busy in Doomtree, the individual members are equally prolific with their own music. Lazerbeak, P.O.S, Dessa, Sims, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, and Cecil Otter have all released solo efforts recently, proving that this is easily one of the most hardworking groups around. But it was for their collective work that Doomtree was named as one of VH1’s Bands To Keep Your Eye On In 2012after their epic set at this year’s SXSW. They have appearances slated at some of the most high-profile summer festivals, including stops at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party, Belgium’s Dour Festival, and Chicago’s Lollapalooza. Their critically acclaimed full length album, No Kings, has been hailed by fans nationwide for its diverse and expert approach, but it is the live show that puts them over the top, and we cannot urge you strongly enough to find the means to attend a Doomtree show.

In the new video for “Beacon” we find the crew presented in a decidedly steampunk atmosphere. Featured in this clip are Dessa, P.O.S., Cecil Otter and Sims, who all take turns telling their side of the story about a love lost and a connection gone bad. Set in what seems to be a turn of the century factory, with wardrobe to match, this black and white clip delivers rapid-fire visuals and camera angles that fit the dark, heavy beats like a blacksmith’s leather glove. Take note of the 3-dimensional feel created by camera work that shifts backgrounds while characters stay in perfect focus and, yes, Doomtree does their own stunts in this one.

In the track for “Beacon,” female MC Dessa spits that “practice doesn’t make perfect, just makes the game more dangerous”, but we’d like to respectfully disagree, because for all the practice they’ve put in, Doomtree is damn near perfect to us!
