Hello, programming friends! It’s Andy Gesner and the crew at HIP Video Promo serving up a truly unique clip that stands just a little bit on the darker side of things. Brett Gleason is a Long Island-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter who has lived a majority of his life in isolation. The time has come for him to confront those demons, and he’s done so here with his debut video for “I Am Not.”

There’s a bit of a dark theatrical feel surrounding “I Am Not.” The video starts off with a suited up Brett Gleason engulfed in a forest all alone, grabbing sharp objects, like a wooden stake and a hook. It’s questionable what he’s trying to get done as his surroundings are blacked out with the occasional spotlight trying to decipher Brett Gleason’s actions. The next thing you know, he’s hauling a body bag into a hole in the ground that he’s dug up quite frantically. Amidst Brett Gleason singing cryptically right into the camera, a body rises from the ground and, low and behold, it’s his alter ego seeking revenge – albeit a lack of clothes. You can only guess what happens next; When you try to bury something that’s in the past, it always comes back to haunt you.

The song itself pairs perfectly with this cinematically dark story that the video is trying to tell. Amidst chants of “I am not afraid to do this to you,” layers of organs and piano attempt to mask the claustrophobia that Brett Gleason is singing about. It’s a feeling that Brett Gleason seems to know all too well, having lived a life of solitude following a childhood accident that left him with a severe speech impediment. What grew out of his misfortune, though, was a dependency on music that was fully orchestrated with progressive arrangements and creative writing. Brett Gleason’s sound can only be described as a well-balanced fusion of the electronic darkness of Trent Reznor with the piano pop pick-me-up of Ben Folds. “I Am Not” is an ideal tease of his debut EP The Dissonance, which depicts a world of isolation that was perhaps bred from the way he grew up. There’s certainly a complexity to Brett Gleason’s delivery – whether it’s musically or visually.
