They’ve also come with a rapped chorus that’s liable to get lodged in your head indefinitely. “Da Bounce” makes good on all the promise that Castor has shown on his mixtapes and independently released albums – it’s the sort of undeniable performance that puts a regional artist into the national conversation.

He’s been building toward this for years: Castor began rapping when he was 9 years old. As an acknowledgment of the kid he used to be, the “Da Bounce” video pairs Castor with a cocky junior version of himself. They dance together in a boxing ring – a symbol of the struggle to be heard that the emcee has always faced. But there’s nothing humorless or combative about the clip, not even the baseball bat that Castor keeps swinging around for emphasis.
