Blues music has been evolving for over a hundred years, ebbing and flowing in style and posture with the feel of each decade. Even with the advent of Rock N’ Roll, there has always been one binding characteristic that’s remained at the genre’s core: soul. Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Joyann Parker carries the torch as a female voice for blues in the 21st century, and her new single “Envy” showcases why she is deservedly the messenger of Blues to the next generation of music fans around the world.
The single comes off her new studio album, Hard To Love. With a release date set for April 13th, this record serves as the perfect cure for seasonal depression, carrying listeners into warmer days with the kind of relatability found exclusively in late night heart-to-hearts with your best friend. Impossible not to root for, Parker’s talents and “force of nature” voice are stunningly dynamic. From acoustic to piano-driven to full band, The Joyann Parker band has taken their message across the country at venues, fests and everything in between. Whether it’s an outdoor festival or a glass-clattering blues club, Joyann Parker’s raw energy effortlessly captivates any audience with mesmerizing style and grace.
The shadow-lain music video for “Envy” is the perfect companion to the vengeful jealousy that spews from Parker’s lips in the song. Director Daniel Cummings mirrors the emotion of the singer’s lines in each dimly lit shot. The aptly titled track tells the tale of Parker’s pure “Envy” for her lover, who just happens to be married. Even though she is singing from the perspective of the “other woman,” she can’t help but wonder if he is saying the same things and offering the same gestures to his wife. It may be wrong, but it’s also a perfect encapsulation of the many sides of human nature.
