We are willing to bet you’ve never met an artist quite like Paula Boggs. She is a proud veteran of the United States Army, where she earned Army Airborne wings and a Congressional appointment to the US Naval Academy. She is also a graduate of both the University of California Berkeley School of Law and Johns Hopkins University, and spent much of her professional life as Starbucks’ top lawyer.

When we first introduced you to Paula Boggs earlier this year we were proud to bring you an artist whose devotion to social justice and equality is first and foremost in her music. Her video for “Carnival Of Miracles” was inspired by the tragic shooting in Newtown, CT (a situation which sadly continues to trend to this day), and for her new video “Look Straight Ahead” she fearlessly puts our nation’s struggles with racial equality front and center. And this time, she’s brought in a little help to really drive the message home. Seattle rapper J. Pinder adds his unique flow and grit to this track, mixing together brilliantly with the soulgrass sound of the Paula Boggs Band.

As one of the most diverse artists we’ve ever worked with, Paula Boggs is uniquely qualified to speak about the American way of life. She’s the former top lawyer for Starbucks, and Army paratrooper and fierce patriot. She’s also one of the many African-American woman shattering the proverbial glass ceiling in the corporate world, which gives her a unique perspective. Several years ago she formed the Paula Boggs Band to pursue her musical passion, and has been on a whirlwind ride ever since. Their album Carnival of Miracles is a complex accomplishment of thought-provoking lyrics, a tasteful aesthetic blending of jazz, rock, folk, and soul, and overall brilliantly produced offering.

In “Look Straight Ahead,” Boggs follows a young inner city male as he goes about his business on the bus and streets of Seattle. He leaves his house early in the morning and he works his way past suspicious cops, poverty in front of him, prostitutes soliciting him, and all of the challenges of his environment. As a young black male with a grey hoodie, the parallels to the Trayvon Martin story are apparent, and the video shows that even for the most non confrontational sometimes trouble is never more than a suspicious glance away. The young man wisely keeps his head down and looks straight ahead, doing his best to get by another day.
