We often see life put in terms of sports analogies, and being from the New York City metro area a common theme we see here at HIP is about how players can’t handle the pressure. They may have been a big shot in a small market but put under the most glaring and intense spotlights they wilt like a delicate rose in the Mojave Desert. The same can be said for aspiring pop stars in the modern music industry. All the high school talent shows and early notoriety from close friends and family just can’t prepare most of them for the inevitable attention and microscopic examination of what they have to offer. One read of her newly minted blog and it’s clear that Caroline Skye is not one of these, in fact she is about as fearless as they come for an artist as fresh as her. She says “singing is like home” and that when she steps in front of the microphone that there is a “cool calm rushing over me because this is my craft”. Believe it or not, this is coming from an artist who is not yet out of her teens.

If Caroline really is an old spirit reborn into a dynamic new package, then we would be willing to bet that she spent time in her past life living her days enjoying the sweet rock and roll sounds of artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and The Eagles, all of whom are considered influences of hers. Her new single “Hot Mess”, from her debut effort Skye’s The Limit, will burn up your ears with its sultry approach and heavy handed delivery. It is simultaneously as heavy as a ton of bricks, but floats from one part to the next like a butterfly in the wind. Within “Hot Mess” we get a guitar solo that Clapton would approve of, a vocal delivery that Stevie Nicks could deliver herself, and a determination that is second to none about a girl getting what she wants! Skye teamed up with the new production team Incub8rs, comprised of veteran producer Mark Picchiotti (Foster The People, The Killers, AC/DC) and Joe Hurt, to craft the sound of not only this new jam, but all of Skye’s The Limit as well.

Perhaps it’s the classic rock and blues upbringing, maybe it’s just inherent, but it’s clear that Caroline wants the bad boy and doesn’t care that he is a hot mess. In her words “he’s like fast car” driving, and this girl has a need for speed! But don’t look for her to shed any tears over any of these boys that can’t keep her happy and stand in her way, because like we said this is a girl who knows what she wants and won’t let any misguided emotions get in her way.

In the video for “Hot Mess”, we get to see Caroline in a wide array of wardrobes and locations, giving us the viewer a glimpse of everything she is capable of. She likened arriving on the video set as “that feeling when you were a kid and you walk down the stairs and creep to the Christmas tree to see if Santa had arrived-that feeling you get when your eyes grew wide because you see all the presents spread around the tree.” Who wouldn’t be excited to see all of this laid out just for them? We get to see Caroline work her magic, almost teasing the bad boys to try to impress her enough to get into her good graces. Whether it be a personal concert while she lies in bed or wooing her on the rooftop of her Chicago loft, it all comes together to make for one very memorable clip about a girl who may like the bad boys but is really the one who is firmly in control.
