“FEDERATION TUNISIENNE DE FOOTBALL”
May 28, 2014
In June of 2014 fans and athletes from all corners of the globe will descend on tropical Brazil for the FIFA World Cup. This quadrennial event is a source of national pride across the world as these football teams (or soccer to us here in the US) live and die by every goal, every penalty kick, and every herculean effort put forth on the field. Bringing this infectious vibe to you today through the power of music and cinema is the Mediterranean’s gritty and groovy C’mon Tigre and their exquisite new video for “Federation Tunisienne de Football.”
The song tells the story of an eccentric football team, their dances and their magical shoes set on a sandy playground, while surrounded by their fans and beasts of the jungle. Football fever is in the air and it’s not clear who is more wild; the fans or the animals! The song has a sparse, jangly feel to it, incorporating horns and falsetto melodies to string together a real bang up tune. The name Afroamericans gave to this dirty downhome style of music was funk in reference to the body odour produced while in a state of excitation. Repetitive riffs and a maximalist attitude in a mosaic of arabic melodies, with a bombastic brass that could make an army of snakes dance, analogue drum machines and sinuous guitars.
One look at even the teaser video for “Federation Tunisienne de Football” and it’s immediately clear that this video is more than just a showcase of the band, it also a true work of art. No computer graphics were used in the making of the video, each frame was painstakingly painted by hand by the gifted Italian artist Gianluigi Toccafondo, some completely from scratch and some overlapping actual photographs and films. The colors are bright and vibrant and the movements have a seamless grace to them that only the most talented artist could achieve. As the wild match plays out in front of our eyes we can honestly say we’ve never seen a video quite like this. Appropriately enough the tiger is on the loose and ready to reek havoc on the players, much like C’mon Tigre has been unleashed on audiences everywhere!
We are very excited to be working with this group and to help share their Mediterranean tale with all of the world, along every longitude and every latitude.
