“CLAP ON THE 2 AND THE 4″
January 14, 2016
Jazz singer-songwriter Ori Dagan, winner of “Best Jazz Vocals” at the 2015 Toronto Independent Music Awards, is one of Canada’s rising jazz stars. You heard that right, jazz! It’s a genre that is often overlooked by mainstream music listeners, but what they don’t realize is that the influence of jazz music is deeply embedded in all genres. With his brand new single for “Clap on the 2 and the 4” he accomplishes not only showing how infectiously entertaining jazz can be, but it also serves as a public service announcement to all show goers and music lovers!
Born in Israel and raised in Toronto, he initially trained as a classical pianist, dabbling in creative writing and musical theatre before discovering Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Lester Young and Charlie Parker. His first two albums, S’Cat Got My Tongue and Less Than Three <3 were critical successes, garnering praise everywhere from The Los Angeles Jazz Scene to The Toronto Star. His unorthodox approach to jazz music, which includes reimagining pop classics and irreverent subject matter, has made him stand out above the fray.
With his charming and sly point of view front and center, Dagan breaks down the fourth wall with the audience on his newest single “Clap on the 2 and the 4.” We’ve all been there; enjoying a live music set, the backbeat is firm and the drummer and band are locked in. Until that stray hand clap comes in. There’s something odd about it. Literally. The claps are happening on the 1 and the 3! Sure, it might sound nitpicky and all, but for anyone who’s ever been in the moment or enjoying a bit of audience participation, this can seriously disrupt the experience!
Fortunately, rather than chiding an excited fan, Ori takes matters into his own hands and constructs a lighthearted explanation of how to get back into the right rhythm. The video is a perfect compliment to the song, with Ori leading a wide variety of fans and friends as they all submit their own personal videos of themselves singing, dancing, and most importantly, CLAPPING along to this lighthearted number. By the time this two minute clip has ended we’ll all be experts!
