Taking cues from acts such as The Stooges, MC5, The White Stripes, and other classic garage rock bands, Louisville, Kentucky’s White Reaper has exploded onto the stage as one of the newest gems unearthed by Polyvinyl Records. This uncompromising power-trio presents their self-titled EP with the needles hammering the red and pushing their tube amps to the limit. Their new video for “Cool” is the perfect compliment to this feel-good track that sticks in the brain with a hooky vocal repetition and propulsive soundtrack.

“Cool” is a microcosm of everything White Reaper. Like the good folks over at Noisey said “being ‘cool’ is all about knowing you are cool—and the first step to knowing you are cool is feeling like you’re cool.” Got that? Perhaps a better description would be their quote “This garage rock does a great job of making me feel like I’m the greatest surfer in the world, that I’m king of the boardwalk, that when I walk down the street wearing a swimsuit all of the women will inevitably fawn over me.” There we go, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves! And with this kind of mentality what better way to make video than to have a party!?

The band wastes no time launching into a blistering set, with a variety of audience members getting in front of the camera for their own unique antics. Up until frontman Tony Esposito launches into his blazing guitar solo the video is merely introducing the characters. The zombie mask, the two pixies mauling Espositio, the constant abuse of their instruments, and a healthy dose of roughhousing rounds it all out. Once it all comes together, though, the party takes off and the entire crowd becomes one unit, swaying and sweating in unison with White Reaper. If you haven’t been to a good basement show in awhile, let this remind you of what you’re missing!
