Ladyhawke, AKA Pip Brown gives us the best possible version of “be kind, rewind” with her retro-tinged new video for “A Love Song.” It embraces the classic synth pop elements of the best hits of the most ridiculously fun and adventurous decades. As a self-described lover of “makin’ noise, pressing buttons, wires, cables,” this is a girl who knows her way around a motherboard.

The New Zealand native originally broke out in 2008 with her self-titled debut album, including the breakout single “Paris is Burning.” The follow-up album, Anxiety, produced similar results on the NZ, Australian, and UK charts. The lead single from her upcoming album, Wild Things (6/3 on Polyvinyl Records), “A Love Song” takes the synth pop goodness and heightens the senses to ambitious new levels. Drawing from her own internal inspiration, Ladyhawke doubled down on both the synth and the pop. Her inspiration? She says “I feel good for the first time in 10 years.”

Few things scream 80’s throwback like the classic video rental store. For the new video for “A Love Song,” Ladyhawke found one of the few remaining relics still in operation, setting up shop with an appropriately eclectic cast of characters. With neon lights soaking every corner of the room, a young clerk mopes behind the counter, lamenting her bad fortune.

All of a sudden a mysterious figure plops a VHS marked “A Love Song” on her pile. Pop it in, and all of a sudden love is in the air, and cupid’s arrows are flying wild. The shy, nerdy guy, the sketchy thief, the goth girl, even the shady old guy coming out of the porn room in the back are all targets for her newfound love and affection! Ladyhawke watches it all from inside the screen of the pastel, plastic Panasonic desktop TV, providing the soundtrack to this 4×3 aspect ratio gem!

We’re all very psyched to be a part of the Ladyhake team, huge thanks to the Polyvinyl Records team for bringing us this stellar artist. She’ll be performing a handful of dates here in the US in June, so if you’d like to catch up with Ladyhawke, please let us know!
