We’re going to start with a little word association. If we said Philippines, Sade, Depeche Mode, Las Vegas, Portishead, Los Angeles, and darkness you’d likely have a head scratcher moment. But once you dive into the world of Layla Kilolu, things start to come together. This self-proclaimed “citizen of the world” uses her own life experience of being born in Las Vegas, raised in the Philippines, and currently residing in Los Angeles to craft a dark and mysterious sound that not only raises your ears for a closer listen, but also may very well raise the hairs on the back of your neck!

One listen to her new single “COMPLACENT” and the artists listed above immediately jump out as powerful influences on Layla’s sound. The dark electronica sound is perfectly crafted to her haunting vocal timbre, painting the perfect compliment to the subject matter of a love that hasn’t quite been lost, but is under strain. Throughout the song she acknowledges that while the subjects may be unhappy, neither has the heart or the will to sever the relationship.

For the “COMPLACENT” video, Layla teamed up with the exceptionally talented director Cale Wilbanks for a video that couldn’t have possibly suited the song better than it does. The video is overflowing with creative lighting, camera angles, editing, and cinematography that lifts the images out of the darkness and into the light and back. Layla plays multiple roles within a virtual room where the various Layla’s vie for attention. The clip showcases Layla incredibly well, and shows the struggle between two people trying to re-connect in a complicated world. All of this to a lush, pulsing, electronic beat!

We’re very excited to be working with Layla Kilolu and her director Cale Wilbanks to bring you this exceptional new video. We’d love to see this video get the support it deserves, so please don’t hesitate to reach out for anything you may need to make that happen!
