Here’s a Jersey artist that you’re unlikely to know, although his pedigree is an interesting one: singer and rapper J Mello is the son of Kool & the Gang lead guitar player Charles Smith. He’s got some famous friends, too — “Torture,” his single, was co-produced by Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction. Lest you think he’s taking advantage of connections, well, maybe he is, butthat his relationship with his dad (who died in Maplewood in 2006) wasn’t so hot.
J Mello describes himself as a rapper, but he sings straight through “Torture,” a guitar-pop song about his girlfriend’s serial cheating. Get set for a narrative as linear as a bullet train, and where it’s heading is nowhere you’d want to be: unable to quit a lover who keeps messing around with your buddies. Give J Mello credit for emotional honesty, and hope that names have been changed to protect the (not so) innocent.
