When we brought you Derek Bishop’s video for “Baggage,” it was an introduction to an artist that was chock full of confidence and attitude. For his new video “Shutting Down,” we see a more vulnerable side of Derek, but delivered in as bombastic and energetic form as we’ve come to expect.
Derek Bishop’s music is a time-capsule of pop stylings, evoking sounds and memories from 50s doo-wop to 80s synth pop — while still sounding fresh and contemporary. His off-beat, often dark lyrics are paired with piano-driven melodies and sprinkled with quirky electronics and horns, creating a dynamic and colorful soundscape, all while getting your toes tapping and your ears delighting to his instantly-catchy tunes. “Shutting Down,” the second single from his new album Bicycling In Quicksand, is stuffed full of synth keys in the foreground, and a backbeat that rides full throttle like a 300 horsepower engine. It sways and swaggers in all the right places, and pulls off the perfect blend of finesse and muscle.
Lyrically speaking, “Shutting Down” is a head-on admission and examination of a relationship slowly reaching the end. With the opening line of “I’ve been mourning the possible upcoming situation I can’t control” Derek sounds like a man who has come to terms with what is coming next. Sometimes it feels like there’s just nothing left to talk about, and the silence speaks volumes. Ever the optimist, Derek also expresses his confidence that despite the rules, the signs and the situations he won’t ever stop “fighting and fixing this failing.” It’s an uphill battle but one worth fighting.
In the “Shutting Down” video, we are treated to a kaleidoscope of colors and imagery of Derek and his crew as they shimmy and shake to the beat. Whether it be bright orange on a black background, or black leather against a white background, the eye candy never stops. Throw in a few choice graphics and odes to the Bicycling In Quicksand album cover and you’ve got a video that gets the blood pumping in all the right places!
We’re all very excited to be working once again with Derek Bishop to bring you his eclectic brand of synth pop. We would love to hook you up with a copy of Bicycling In Quicksand or anything else you might to get this video into your programming, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
